How To Block Internet Download Manager Automatic Updates

Update: 17/11/2012

There is a much more effective way of stopping the update checks, you will need to open up regedit (there isno need to run as administrator) and go to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DownloadManager

and then change the “LastCheck” and/or “LastTry” value to something like e.g.:

[10/22/15]

Then restart your computer and you will no longer be nagged!

I have always hated how Internet Download Managers developers have forced the “automatic update” us all of its users.

As well as sending sensitive (serial / license checking) data back to their servers, it also nags you to update!

If you want to put an end to this invasion of privacy, all you need to do it is simply add the following to your host file:

174.133.70.198 localhost
174.133.70.98 localhost
star.tonec.com localhost

You can edit your host file you a utility such as BarevTM Host File Editor

Or you can setup your firewall to block this IP on ALL ports: 174.133.70.198 AND 174.133.70.98 AND this Host: star.tonec.com

    Hello Aman,

127.0.0.1 equates to “localhost”, hence is just another way of phrasing it, they both represent the same thing :)

Make sure you block the address star……. with a firewall, IP addresses change, generally it is safer to block the hostname

I was really hoping this would work… but it still pesters me about updating :(

I have edited the host file… I don’t have access to the router ….. Any other way to kill this update check?

I really appreciate it…

It works to some extent, try using a firewall (which I hope you have) and block the address mentioned in the post. It works perfectly fine, I am using the latest edition of IDM now and no problems. It might popup displaying unable to connect to the server, but this is engrained into the application.

Admin,

Thank you. Been looking for a respite from IDM’s constant nagging. You’re a real mensch.

First of all thank you for this method
By Copying and Pasting the following code into notepad and than save it as Anyname.reg(and than simply open it) may help and easier alternative of above mentioned method for Computer beginners if admin like can add it in form of registery key with downloading option

Copy from here down to end not include these and above lines

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DownloadManager]

Don’t work anymore… it worked for a couple of months… I was surprised, today, a update check suddenly appeared… BTW, my last check date on registry is 09/02/25…

Though I didn’t tweaked my IP…
